The introduction sets forth the conceptual basis for the selection of references and their grouping. References are to books and journal articles and are drawn from the sociologic and medical literatures. The emphasis is on theory and concept rather than on the practicalities of relationships. Will be more useful to medical sociologists than practitioners.
