To the Editors: We studied the effects of two coffee brands on psychometric test results and ethanol intake among 20 chronic alcoholics (6 women and 14 men, 35 to 53 years of age, each with a reported minimum daily intake of 500 mL of alcohol for more than 1 year). We evaluated the patients' concentration capacity, short-term and retrograde memory, and daily alcohol intake. No caffeine-containing beverages were taken from 5 days before the beginning of the study, and all patients were given control tests. Patients were then assigned in a double-blind randomized trial to one of two treatment groups:
