Last year when I was invited to give the eleventh David Rabin Memorial Lecture at Vanderbilt Medical Center, I was puzzled by their selection, but the more I learned about Dr. Rabin, the clearer their reasons for inviting me became. Dr. Rabin, a renowned endocrinologist, was stricken by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 1979 at the age of 45 years.
