On turning to most pages of this major textbook the internist might size it up as yet another magnum opus of internal medicine, with sections on metabolic diseases, endocrine disorders, immunologic diseases, infections, cancer, the gut, circulation, and blood. With a closer look she would see here and there the focus on the questions and decisions directly relevant to diagnosis in, and care of, the pregnant mother. There are major sections, too, on genetic considerations, nutrition, and other essentially obstetric matters. The last section discusses "the fetus as patient."
