It has been said that the practice of medicine is an art, not a science. Nevertheless, anyone who has gone to medical school in the last decade realizes that there have been tremendous advances in the fields of biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology that have greatly contributed to our understanding of the pathophysiology of disease. This is especially true in the treatment of cardiovascular disease where advances in basic sciences have contributed greatly to our mushrooming knowledge in virtually all aspects of cardiology.
