The best treatment for any disease process cannot be considered optimal without knowing the cause of the disease. This is certainly true of ulcerative colitis. Of the various modalities available for the treatment, some of which work some of the time, not one is effective in all cases. This is in keeping with the realization that the etiology of ulcerative colitis remains an enigma, despite the progress made in understanding the natural course, complications, surgical innovations, and overall management including drug therapy.
