When asked by the patient with a recently diagnosed connective tissue disease, the question "Will I be able to lead a normal life?" is difficult for the physician to address in an informed way. Thus, Prognosis in the Rheumatic Diseases, the first book addressing this topic, is a welcome addition. It summarizes data on prognosis and, perhaps even more importantly, highlights difficulties inherent in assessing the prognosis of these chronic diseases.
The topics for this multi-author book were well chosen. Included are discussions of most arthritides and diffuse connective disease syndromes, soft tissue rheumatism (fibrositis), low back pain, and the
