In their otherwise excellent review of recently published studies on osteoporosis treatment and prevention, Roach and colleagues (1) state that “Raloxifene and tamoxifen reduce the risk for breast cancer.” This statement is misleading because it implies that the two drugs are equally effective for this purpose. Although the Multiple Outcomes of Raloxifene Evaluation noted a significant reduction in breast cancer risk (2), this trial was not designed with breast cancer incidence as a primary end point. Tamoxifen is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for reduction of incidence of breast cancer in high-risk women, but any recommendation regarding the use of raloxifene for this purpose should await the results of further studies. The Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene, a national, multicenter trial designed to assess the relative efficacies of tamoxifen and raloxifene for breast cancer prevention, will ultimately provide this information.
