Myocardial oxygen requirements (MqO2) are supplied by the interaction of coronary blood flow (CBF) and myocardial oxygen extraction. Earlier studies have shown the relative constancy of myocardial O2 extraction in various states (rest, exercise, hypoxia, anemia), so long as coronary blood flow reserve is unimpaired.
Forty-four patients were studied by coronary venous catheterization at rest and during exercise with measurement of coronary and systemic hemodynamics. Distinct patterns of myocardial O2 supply were observed in various clinical states.
