The opening chapters, "Drug Therapy, Placebos and Tonics," and "Development of New Drugs, Therapeutic Trials," are the best discussions of these topics that the reviewer has read. They are both brief and straight to the point, and this is true for the twenty-seven succeeding chapters. The use of British names and terms for drugs (like local analgesics) may annoy some American readers but confusion is very unlikely. The book is full of direct quotations, because the authors feel that where a point has been well made by an original observer or thinker, there are excellent reasons for not imposing the
