To the editor: Authors are not supposed to respond to reviews of their books, but silence is difficult to maintain when a reviewer seems to have missed the point so completely. In commenting on my new book, Clinical Epidemiology (1), in the October 1985 issue (2), the reviewer laments my failure to acknowledge "the fundamental role of statistical inference," the "one or two conceptual frameworks" that underlie "all investigations of the natural world," and the way that scientific problems can be solved by "new and powerful statistical techniques."
