To the Editors: Delays in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and bacterial meningitis were documented in patients admitted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, a 461-bed teaching hospital. Patients with a positive culture from a cerebrospinal fluid specimen obtained on hospital day 1 were considered to have community-acquired meningitis (1). Infants with meningitis in the first week of life, patients with hospital-acquired meningitis, and patients who previously had received antibiotics were excluded.
