These men of biology
are gone. No more
racing to the hatchery
on day thirteen and a half
of incubation. They knitted
experiments with test tubes,
drilled windows in chicken eggs
with a dentist's drill,
dissected and transplanted
each other's thoughts,
wrote and re-wrote,
typed and stapled their studies.
They harvested, fixed, embedded with wax,
sectioned, stained and studied
the glands of unborn birds.
I remember how they kicked me
out of their lab. Then took me back.
They made me laugh with frequent
irrelevant references to the papal monkeys.
