In the past 20 years, our knowledge of exercise as a primary intervention and rehabilitative process has grown rapidly, as has the role of exercise in diagnosis. This timely text draws on the expertise of basic scientists, epidemiologists, and practicing clinicians.
Chapters 1 and 2 review basic fundamentals of exercise physiology and describe the healthy adult with respect to exercise testing and the conditioning process. Chapters 3 to 15 cover specific areas of medicine where exercise has documented benefit. Almost without exception, each chapter outlines our present understanding of exercise as it relates to the pathophysiology present.
