A quiet revolution has been occurring in the treatment of tuberculosis through use of a combination of drugs that can kill tubercle bacilli. Field trials based on sound theoretical considerations and experimental corroboration (1-3) have been conducted over the past 10 years; these trials have demonstrated a remarkable efficacy of greatly shortened periods of treatment (4, 5). It has even been found that much of the medication can be given as "pulse therapy" twice weekly rather than daily, as has been the usual practice (6, 7).
