Many monographs and full-length books have been written on respiratory physiology and the justification of still another should be reasonably questioned. I began my review with this attitude in mind, and I became quickly astonished by the author's admission that he had not done research in respiration and his bold-faced statement "I am not a respiratory physiologist. . . ." Recognizing that Jacquez was writing for the graduate student, I doubted that he was correct in directing his review to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, all scientists in the biological and medical sciences, and clinicians who are concerned with respiratory physiology.
