Parkinson disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects approximately 1% of persons older than 65 years and 2.5% of persons older than 80 years (1). More than 4 million individuals are affected worldwide, and this number is expected to double by 2030 (2). The disease is associated with increased morbidity and mortality and a high economic burden. The direct cost of care for Parkinson disease in the United States varies from $2000 to more than $15 000 a year for each patient (3).
