I was diagnosed 2 years ago, at the age of 51. The symptoms had come on slowly: muscle spasms, fatigue, weakness in my left leg and my hands. Once down, I could not get up from the floor.
I hid it all from my family, colleagues, and residents for months. There was just no time for this. I had been program director in internal medicine for 10 years, well beyond the tenure of most, because I loved it, loved the residents, and was every bit a father figure to them. I was peaking in my career, giving back to the school and training program that had given me so much.
