I did not serve in the military. I was never drafted (there was one once), and I was not very good at volunteering. After medical school, I completed my training at an academic medical center affiliated with a VA medical center. Some of my earliest rotations were on the VA medical service, and I have been doctoring veterans ever since. Early in my career, I assumed administrative responsibilities at that VA medical center. As part of my duties, I took my turn doing compensation and pension (C & P) examinations, a component of the VA's disability program.
