A dramatically increased interest in diseases of the esophagus has resulted in a burgeoning literature. Groups of physicians have formed organizations based on this interest. Although the titles suggest that these volumes are a much needed comprehensive review of benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus, these volumes are a collection of manuscripts prepared from presentations given at the Fourth World Congress of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, held in Chicago, Illinois, from 6 to 8 September, 1989.
