Many of the syndromes reviewed are seen in nonemergency settings but must be regarded as likely to justify rapid identification, assessment, and treatment. The syndromes include those from disorders of water, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and lactate metabolism; from diabetes mellitus, thyroid and adrenal disorders, and alcohol and alcoholism effects. Much of this monograph's content represents what can be found in major standard textbooks on metabolic and endocrine disorders.
