The mediastinum is that portion of the thoracic cavity which is bounded above by the superior thoracic inlet, below by the diaphragm, posteriorly by the anterior surface of the bodies of the thoracic vertebrae, anteriorly by the posterior surface of the sternum and laterally by the mediastinal reflections of the pleura. It is divided, arbitrarily, into anterior, middle, posterior and superior divisions.
