Adult tuberculosis is a chronic disease whose clinical picture usually is made up of alternating periods of quiescence and activity. The symptoms vary according to the type and the particular state of the disease at the time of consideration. There are certain symptoms which belong almost exclusively to periods of activity, others to periods of quiescence, and still others to periods of both quiescence and activity. The disappearance of the common symptoms does not indicate that healing has been accomplished, or even that the disease is quiescent.
