Cohn had previously published the results of his work on the occurrence of protective bodies in experimental syphilis, in which he found that a spirocheticidal action of the sera of syphilitic rabbits resulted after the third injection of spirochetes. The sera of human syphilitics in different stages of the disease showed no such effects. On the other hand the serum of paretics, who had been treated with injections of dead spirochetes showed the same effect as the sera of syphilitic rabbits. The work of Hauptmann and Gallinek paralleled that of Cohn only in part, for Cohn worked with experimental syphilis
