This study had been organized prior to the death of Dr. Goldberger and had been partly carried out under his direction. It has beeen shown that dogs on the basic blacktongue-producing diet No. 268 develop signs of blacktongue in a period which only occasionally exceeds 53 days. When Minot's liver extract, in a daily dose equivalent to 100 gms. of fresh liver was given to 5 dogs on this diet, the occurrence of blacktongue was prevented for a period of at least 185 days.
