Experiment has demonstrated that not only the sinus node but the A-V node, the auriculoventricular bundle of His and the bundle branches, with their arborizations have the capacity for impulse production. This fact was established by the Stannius' ligatures. If a ligature is tied around the sinus of a frog's heart, or placed below the level at which the cardiac rhythm is generated, the heart ceases to beat temporarily below the level of this ligature, but after a brief standstill takes up a regular rhythm of its own.
