Our national airs and patriotic songs, like the weather, have always been considered the legitimate subject of criticism. The words are unsuitable, the music is not good, it is beyond the range of the average voice, or some other objection is advanced. No other patriotic song has come under fire more often than has the old fashioned tune and words of the Revolutionary War song, Yankee Doodle. The words are mere nonsense, say the critics, and the music is ridiculous, a mere hurdy-gurdy style of composition.
