The investigators to whom bacteriology owes its rapid development during the latter part of the last century were untrained in taxonomy and the rules of biological nomenclature. The results were quite naturally the frequent adoption of faulty names for bacteria and the lack of an adequate and satisfactory system of classification. A number of attempts have since been made to correct these errors but the suggested changes have not had official sanction.
