In 1925, Mason, Davidson et al. published a series of papers,1, 2, 3 recording the observations made on animals which died in 15 to 18 hours as a result of a small piece of liver tissue left free within the abdomen. While doing this work, we conceived the idea that death following burns was probably due to the same factors which caused the death of these animals.
