The reviewer has not previously read a biography of William Withering, and indeed no other seems to be extant. The author's source material is revealed in the appendix and includes the memoir by Withering's son. One does not gain a very adequate impression of the personality of the man from this biography, but this is doubtless due to the lack of material from which to draw such a picture rather than to any fault of the author.
