Starling's hypothesis relating the exchange of fluid between the capillaries and the interstitial body fluids to a balance between hydrostatic pressure within the capillaries and osmotic pressure of the plasma proteins, permits prediction of some conditions under which edema will be found. Moore and Van Slyke1 found that in adults with Bright's disease when the plasma albumin level fell below 2.5 grams per 100 c.c. edema almost invariably occurred and could not be controlled by salt restriction alone. Farr and Van Slyke2 found that in similar circumstances the plasma albumin of children averaged 1.2 grams per 100 c.c. Direct measurements
