That sulfonamides exert considerably greater retarding effect on the development of bacteria than viruses, has been too common an experience to require more than passing mention. Consequently, it is not surprising, as previous reports from this laboratory have already indicated,1, 2, 3 that in the administration of sulfadiazine little influence was observed on the incidence and severity of acute respiratory infections presumably of viral etiology.
