Although we have made great progress in our understanding of deficiency diseases and similar progress in cardiology, not much seems to be known about beriberi heart disease, if we can judge by American publications. To elaborate this idea the following statements can be made. The diagnosis of thiamin deficiency, i.e., American beriberi, can be made with reasonable certainty, as shown by the studies of Aring and Spies at Birmingham1 and by others.
