For years it has been customary to administer alkalis in conjunction with oral salicylate therapy, based on the assumption that sodium bicarbonate protects the stomach by inhibiting the release of salicylic acid.1 However, not until the recent work of Coburn2 has it become customary to administer massive doses of salicylates over a protracted period.
