Vitamin D has been used for its anti-rachitic properties, uneventfully, for about 20 years. Relatively recently, large doses of vitamin D have been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Perhaps the primary reason for this has been the deluge of literature and advertising which has descended upon the medical profession, concerning the efficacy and low toxicity of an activated, heatvaporized ergosterol made by the Whittier process. Both of these beliefs must be questioned.
