The people who have worked for many years gathering information on the natural history of poliomyelitis are more impressed with the tremendous amount that remains to be learned than with what is known at the present time. That is not to say that in the approximately 40 years since the discovery of the virus etiology of the disease, there has not been accumulated a great deal of basic information, but what we know is still so sketchy that different investigators can interpret the available data in different ways.
