The material in this volume, as in the first edition, has been limited to studies made in the Laboratory of General Physiology at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and to closely related work. In the ten years since the earlier edition, the number of enzymes which have been isolated and crystallized has reached 35 and the controversy over the protein nature of enzymes has been largely settled. The chemical structure responsible for activity and the question as to whether or not prosthetic groups are necessary is, however, still under discussion.
Much new material has been included in this edition.
