For years there have been many theories and explanations given for the causes of the heart sounds. There is still considerable variance of opinion, controversy and debate among investigators as to the exact causes of the heart sounds. This is especially true of the first heart sound. It is fairly well agreed among most investigators that the second heart sound is due chiefly to the closure of the semilunar valves.
