Three years ago, Shorb1 discovered a new factor in refined liver extracts that was highly potent in promoting growth of the microörganism Lactobacillus lactis Dorner. Using the microbiologic method of Shorb, Riches2 et al. isolated a pure crystalline compound from liver and designated it vitamin B12. West3 proved that this substance possessed the property of inducing a hematopoietic response in patients with pernicious anemia in relapse. At about the same time, Smith4 in England announced the isolation of a factor apparently identical to vitamin B12.
