Although it is known that abrupt withdrawal of barbiturates from persons who have been chronically intoxicated with large amounts of these drugs may precipitate a serious abstinence syndrome,1, 2 a review of the American literature revealed no report in which death was attributed to abstinence from barbiturates. Three cases in which death was associated with withdrawal of barbiturates were found in the German literature.
