Synthetic adrenal steroids possessing biologic activity greater than that of the naturally occurring secretory products of the adrenal cortex are of considerable theoretic importance and, in certain instances, may offer unusual opportunities for hormone therapy. Furthermore, it is of particular interest that the isolation and identification of a very active, naturally occurring sodium-retaining adrenal steroid (aldosterone) should have coincided with the synthesis of derivatives of hydrocortisone possessing physiologic activities manyfold greater than those of any previously known naturally occurring steroid.
