There are a number of startling facts about alcoholism that every physician should know. It is estimated that there are currently 4,712,000 Americans suffering from alcoholism. At least 1,650,000 problem drinkers are in industry. Alcoholism costs society in one single year more than one billion dollars. One out of every fifteen drinkers eventually becomes an alcoholic. For every alcoholic there are an additional four or five people who suffer—family, friends, employers, employees, etc. One out of every five alcoholics is a woman.
These facts are an indication of the seriousness of the problem of alcoholism, and point up the extreme
