In April 1956, The National Institute of Cardiology of Mexico sponsored the First International Symposium on Rheumatic Fever. A group of prominent investigators from Brazil, Canada, England, the United States and Mexico took active part in this symposium. Among others, Benedict Massell discussed the clinical and preventive aspects of rheumatic cardiopathies; E. G. Bywaters, the immunological aspects and Paul Klemperer the histopathogenesis of rheumatic fever. Edward Bland discussed aortic insufficiency in young adults. The Brazilian group presented original work on electrophoretic studies. The Mexican group among other topics discussed digitalis intoxication and the visceral lesions in rheumatic fever.
