The synthesis of chlorothiazide by Novello and Sprague1 and the discovery of its favorable saluretic action2, 18, 19 introduced a unique type of pharmaceutic agent to the management of cardiovascular diseases. Chlorothiazide (Diuril), a heterocyclic sulfonamyl compound (figure 1A) is an orally effective diuretic, useful in the treatment of congestive heart failure and other edematous conditions.
