The National Office of Vital Statistics1 estimated that there were more than 200,000 illegitimate births in the United States in 1957. A comparison of this figure with estimates for previous years demonstrates that the illegitimacy rate has more than doubled in the last 15 years. The problem is a serious one, and if the trend continues the problem will become much more serious. Of the 200,000 illegitimate births more than 50% were to mothers 17 years old or younger.
