The application of the serologic tests used in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis to other non-rheumatic clinical situations is described in this report. A simple, rapid, inexpensive test in which finger-tip blood as well as serum can be used—the eosin slide latex fixation test of Singer and Plotz—was used in this study.
Demonstration of positive tests in all patients with acute viral hepatitis and in about 80% of patients with active hepatic cirrhosis suggests that it may be a useful indicator of active inflammatory hepatocellular disease.
