A mortality of 70 per cent in 13 patients with acute Friedländer's pneumonia was reported from this hospital in 1956 (1). The occurrence of all the deaths within 48 hours of admission emphasized the urgency of early diagnosis and the need for prompt institution of appropriate therapy. Penicillin, given in the belief that pneumococcal pneumonia was being treated, proved ineffective with this series of patients.
The current series also demonstrates that the picture presented by patients with Friedländer's pneumonia is not sufficiently characteristic to permit a diagnosis solely on clinical grounds. In an attempt to achieve an earlier diagnosis, examination
