The introduction of chromatographic methods for the determination of amino-acids led to the discovery of numerous conditions associated with increased urinary excretion of amino acids in various inherited or acquired conditions. In our laboratory we have adapted the ninhydrin colorimetric method for the simple determination of total amino-acids of urine as a screening method for the detection of amino-acidurias. It was during these studies that we encountered gross amino-aciduria in a patient with hyperparathyroidism. Following the removal of a parathyroid carcinoma the urinary amino-acid excretion returned to normal.
