Obstructive pulmonary emphysema is a common disorder which presents many problems to the practicing physician and the investigator. These problems include defining the disease by the pathologist, determining the cause, understanding and measuring the functional derangements, making the clinical diagnosis, and developing effective means of prevention and treatment of the primary disorder and its complications. Articles in the current issue of the ANNALS deal in detail with several of these subjects. A brief survey of some items of major interest in the field is presented here.
