"There are some who possess that intangible quality known as leadership, to whom all others turn for counsel, guidance, and inspiration. Such was Alfred Stengel, whose sudden and unexpected death on April 10, 1939, deprived American medicine of one of its most distinguished clinicians and robbed the American College of Physicians of a beloved and honored master as well as a loyal and ardent champion" (1).
